Buy the lounge for comfortable outdoor rest, not a promise of safe tanning

For the type of folding lounge commonly sold as a tanning chair, the Ostrich Original Chaise is the simplest long flat-format comparison. Deluxe Chaise adds width and a different fabric without raising the capacity. Altitude 3N1 is the alternative to investigate when a higher sixteen-inch seat and adjustable footrest matter more than the smallest folded package.

These recommendations compare current manufacturer documentation checked November 6, 2026. We have not tested the chairs, pressure points, reclining mechanisms or UV protection. All three come from Ostrich’s documented range because their face-opening and reclining formats address this specific search; the comparison is not evidence that one brand outperforms every outdoor lounger.

The FDA tanning guidance explains that a UV-induced tan signals skin damage and that there is no safe tan. A chair does not change that risk. Use this guide to choose furniture for shaded reading or outdoor lounging; it does not provide a tanning schedule. The CDC skin-cancer prevention guidance supports shade, protective clothing and suitable sun protection.

Three documented lounge formats

A face opening is a furniture feature, not a medical positioning device. Check whether the actual opening, arm slots and fabric arrangement are comfortable for the way you intend to read or rest. If a position is uncomfortable, change position rather than treating the opening as a reason to remain there longer.

Product documentation checked November 6, 2026: Ostrich Original Chaise official collection specifications, Ostrich Deluxe Chaise official specifications, Ostrich Altitude 3N1 official collection specifications. The model-specific comparison below uses those published details rather than physical tests.

1. Ostrich Original Chaise Lounge

Best for: a basic long folding chaise.

Original Chaise provides a four-position back, a closable face opening and arm slots. Ostrich lists seventy-two by twenty-two by twelve inches extended, a 9.46-pound item weight and a 250-pound capacity. It is the simplest long-format candidate in this comparison.

The relatively low twelve-inch height and the actual clear sitting width need a personal check. A face opening may suit some reading positions but does not establish comfortable support for every body or a medical benefit. The manufacturer lists polyester fabric and a steel frame; follow the supplied care instructions.

Product Details

BrandOstrich
Extended dimensions72 × 22 × 12 inches
Folded dimensions28.7 × 3.4 × 21.9 inches
Product weight9.46 lb
Manufacturer capacity250 lb

Pros

  • Lighter listed item than Deluxe
  • Long folding-chaise format

Cons

  • Low sitting height
  • Narrower listed outline

Choose it when the basic geometry works and extra storage or width is unnecessary.

2. Ostrich Deluxe Chaise Lounge

Best for: more width in the same long chaise format.

Deluxe Chaise increases the listed width to twenty-four inches while retaining seventy-two-inch length, twelve-inch height and a 250-pound capacity. Its official description adds quick-drying Textilene mesh, storage and a padded carrying strap.

The item is listed at 10.8 pounds. Wider and better equipped does not establish a higher load rating, easier personal access or greater usable width at every point. Compare the actual fabric area and the folded dimensions before paying for a feature that may not solve your particular complaint.

  • Mesh and storage differences

Cons

  • Capacity unchanged from Original
  • More item weight

Consider it when the width or carrying/storage extras address a real requirement.

3. Ostrich Altitude 3N1

Best for: a higher seat and adjustable footrest.

Altitude 3N1 has a documented sixteen-inch seat and a 275-pound capacity, with an aluminum frame, adjustable back and footrest, and armrests. It is a chair-style alternative to choosing another low folding chaise.

Its larger folded package is an important cost in portability, despite a listed 10.2-pound item weight. Check the position diagram and useful leg support rather than directly comparing its raised-back overall dimensions with a flat chaise. The higher seat is a fit feature, not an accessibility certification.

Pros

  • Higher documented sitting surface
  • Adjustable footrest and arms

Cons

  • Larger folded package
  • Position-specific dimensions need interpretation

Choose it when the higher seat matters enough to justify the different layout and carrying bulk.

Compare the long chaise with the footrest chair correctly

The Original and Deluxe Chaise have published extended dimensions of seventy-two inches in length. That makes them useful candidates for someone who wants a long flat-format surface. Their twelve-inch height remains relatively low, however, and getting down to or up from that position should be a practical part of the personal fit check.

Altitude 3N1 is described as a chair with an adjustable footrest and a sixteen-inch seat. Its listed overall extended height reflects a raised-back configuration; it is not directly comparable to the twelve-inch height in a flat chaise description. Do not conclude that a tall overall dimension means the sitting surface is equally high or that a shorter overall length guarantees less leg support in every reclining position.

Ask for the current position diagram if the exact fully reclined length matters to your body fit or patio. Product families can include Original, Deluxe, Backpack and Altitude variants, each with different heights, fabric and carrying arrangements. A photograph from one variant does not establish the measurements of another.

The length-and-width fitting worksheet

Measure a clear rectangle for the deployed chair, and separately record the sitting area you need. Overall width includes frame or arm elements and should not be treated as usable fabric width. If your shoulders, hips or elbows require a particular clear distance, ask the manufacturer for that dimension rather than assuming the full catalog width is available to the body.

For example, Original and Deluxe both list seventy-two inches of length, while Deluxe’s listed width increases from twenty-two to twenty-four inches. That extra two inches may be useful to a reader who dislikes a narrow frame beside the elbows. It does not establish that every body-contact area is two inches wider, and it does not change the 250-pound rating.

Now compare a hypothetical seventy-four-inch-tall reader with that seventy-two-inch outline. The numbers alone do not say where the head and feet will land because the frame edges, face opening and reclining angle matter. This reader should obtain the relevant dimension drawing or try the actual chair rather than assume that height minus overall length is a reliable comfort calculation.

Plan the shaded footprint, not just the empty patio

A lounge takes up space in front of and behind its ordinary sitting position. Place it where changing the back position and moving around the frame will not block a doorway, pool route or other furniture. Do not use a water-side lounge as pool-access equipment or assume it is intended to be submerged merely because the listing mentions the pool.

Shade also moves. Check whether the location remains shaded when you expect to use the chair, and reposition the furniture as needed within an appropriate level area. A small shadow over the face does not cover exposed arms and legs, and reflected light can reach skin even when the setting feels cool. The chair’s fabric description is not a whole-body UV-protection claim.

If an umbrella or canopy is part of the plan, evaluate that as a separate product with its own instructions and placement requirements. None of the three chairs here becomes wind-rated shade equipment by adding an improvised attachment. Keep the lounge purchase focused on its intended sitting and reclining functions.

The carry-and-storage calculation

The Original Chaise is listed at 9.46 pounds and folds to 28.7 by 3.4 by 21.9 inches. Deluxe is listed at 10.8 pounds with a similar folded thickness but greater folded height. Those differences are worth considering when the chair must be carried from a parking area, lifted into a trunk or stored behind other equipment.

A strap helps carry a long object but does not remove its bulk. Measure the trunk opening, not just the capacity of the trunk once something is inside. Check whether the folded chair can pass the opening while the rest of your trip equipment is packed. When carrying several items, consider whether the strap interferes with a cooler or bag on the same side.

Altitude’s listed folded size is thirty-nine by 7.1 by 29.33 inches, a larger package than either chaise in this comparison. Its higher seat may be useful enough to justify that bulk, but it is a different portability decision. Do not choose by product weight alone when the main obstacle is the size of a narrow storage gap.

A worked choice between Original, Deluxe and Altitude

Consider someone who wants a chair for a shaded patio and occasionally carries it a short distance to a beach. Their current complaint is narrow elbow room, and a twelve-inch sitting height is already practical for them. Deluxe is the first comparison because the width change directly addresses the complaint while retaining the long chaise format.

Now consider someone whose main complaint is the effort of using a low seat. The Deluxe’s wider outline does not address that height issue. Altitude’s documented sixteen-inch seat is a more relevant candidate, but its arms, reclined support and larger folded package still need checking. A height preference alone does not establish that the chair suits any particular mobility condition.

Finally consider a buyer who only needs the basic long folding chaise and wants the lighter published item. Original is a sensible starting point if its clear dimensions fit. Paying for a large bag, cup holder or different fabric is worthwhile only when those features matter to the actual use, rather than because Deluxe sounds categorically more comfortable.

Use and care should match the material and mechanism

The manufacturer describes steel frames for the Original and Deluxe Chaise and aluminum for Altitude 3N1, with different listed fabrics. Treat those as material descriptions rather than a promise that a chair can remain wet, sandy or exposed indefinitely. Follow the exact supplied cleaning, drying and storage directions for the purchased version.

Before use, confirm that the frame, supports and reclining parts are in the intended positions described by the instructions. Do not transfer an adjustment sequence from a similar-looking chair, and keep hands clear of folding joints while operating them. Inspect damage or missing parts before continuing, and contact the seller instead of using an improvised brace or altered hinge.

The published 250- and 275-pound capacities are manufacturer limits, not results of our tests or guarantees against tipping on every surface. They do not authorize two-person use or sitting on a narrow footrest. Use the chair only as its instructions describe and choose a model with the required documented rating rather than extrapolating from frame appearance.

Choose the exact variant and keep the reason simple

Check the product name, material, listed height and included carry equipment before ordering. Family names can mix a twelve-inch chaise, a fourteen-inch backpack chair and a sixteen-inch Altitude seat within similar retailer search results. Save the specification for the exact version and the seller’s assembled-return conditions.

Choose Original for its basic longer chaise format and lighter listed weight, Deluxe for the documented width and fabric differences, or Altitude for the higher seat and adjustable-footrest chair layout. Reject a model if its usable dimensions or access do not fit, even when the marketing photograph looks inviting.

A useful tanning-chair purchase is still an outdoor-furniture decision. It can improve a shaded reading or lounging setup, but it cannot make deliberate UV exposure harmless. Let the furniture fit, carrying route and intended position determine the choice rather than promises about a better or faster tan.
